Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga, which takes its name from its founder Sri BKS Iyengar , is a form of Hatha Yoga that emphasizes detail, precision and alignment in the execution of postures (asanas) and pranayama (the yogic breath control)

Strength, flexibility and stability of the body are obtained through the constant practice (abhyasa) of yoga postures.

The practice of yoga is a powerful instrument to soothe and relieve the mental and psychological stress of modern life , while taking care of our health as well as our physical and physiological balance.

Sri BKS Iyengar has systematized more than 200 postures of classical yoga and 14 different types of Pranayama (yogic breathing, with several variations of each), which range from the most basic to the most advanced. This ensures gradual progress for practitioners by greatly minimizing the risk of injury .

The frequent, but not compulsory, use of supports , such as straps, bricks or thick blankets, allows the postures to be adapted to make them accessible to the possible physical limits of the student, which makes the practice of Iyengar Yoga possible at all ages and   in all physical conditions

A unique practice

Specificities of Iyengar Yoga:

  • precise and rigorous alignment in the postures and the regular practice of pranayama (for students who have reached the necessary level). The correct alignment of the body allows a harmonious development of the muscles and a better functioning of the joints: it is a practice without danger and without suffering.

  • the organization of the sequences of postures and breathing exercises in precise sequences , specially studied to obtain the desired physical, mental and energetic effects;

  • the definition of a timing specific to each posture or breathing exercise.

Standing postures

Standing postures are of great importance in the practice of Iyengar yoga, they:

  • strengthen the legs

  • increase vital energy

  • improve circulation, coordination and balance.

The standing postures are therefore   widely studied in the first years of practice and constitute a fundamental basis for the exercise of more advanced postures.

The role of the teacher

In an Iyengar yoga class, visual demonstrations and precise verbal directions are given by the teacher to get the practitioner to work correctly and to actively prevent and correct misalignment.

Teacher training

Iyengar yoga teachers are trained according to worldwide standardized programs by BKS Iyengar . The training course to obtain the first basic teacher's diploma includes three years of study and the first two exams, corresponding to the "Base 1" and "Base 2" levels.   Higher level exams will then allow the teacher to enrich his professional career and specialize in the more complex branches of the discipline, such as therapeutic or prenatal yoga, whose teaching is authorized only to teachers who have obtained the higher diplomas. The therapeutic effects of yoga have been known since antiquity, and through a lifetime's work, BKS Iyengar has made it one of the strengths of his technique (go to the Benefits of Yoga section).
